Do our bodies need water?

Jul 15, 2010 by

Yes most definitely. It is estimated that the average adult needs to drink at least 8-12 glasses of high quality, pure water daily. The actual amount can vary according to  factors like body size, climate, temperature, humidity, regional altitude as well as physical activity, mental activity and stress factors.

A simple test of whether we are drinking enough water is to check  our  urine. When we are drinking enough water, our urine is odourless and colourless.

If our body’s water content drops by as little as 2%,  we will feel tired. If it drops by  10% significant health problems can be experienced and losses greater than that can be fatal.

Are we drinking enough?

Many of us don’t drink enough water daily and don’t consider water as the cause or the solution to our health or illnesses.

Every cell in every living thing, whether plants or people, contains a nutrient fluid that is mostly water. Every cell is also floating around other cells in an ‘extra cellular’ sea of saline water. These extra cellular fluids carry the electric charges that enable the cells to communicate with each other. They transport nutrients (food and oxygen) to the cells and organs of the body and transport waste products and toxins out of the body. They regulate body temperature and act as a lubricant and cushion for the joints and bones. They quench free radicals by binding to them and are crucial to the body’s overall capacity to repair, restore, heal and regenerate.

Water is needed for virtually every function of the body:

  • It improves oxygen delivery to the cells
  • Transports nutrients
  • Enables cellular hydration
  • Moistens oxygen for easier breathing
  • Cushions joints and bones
  • Absorbs shocks to joints and organs
  • Regulates body temperature
  • Removes wastes
  • Flushes toxins
  • Prevents tissues from sticking
  • Lubricates joints
  • Improves cell to cell communications
  • Maintains normal electrical properties of cells
  • Empowers the body’s natural healing process

By now it is becoming crystal clear just how important water is.

Our cells, blood, tissue fluids, saliva, digestive juices and many other components are mainly made up of water.

Even our bones contain water and an organ like our brain is up to 80% water.

  • Blood 83% water
  • Muscles 75% water
  • Brain 75% water
  • Heart 75% water
  • Bones 22% water
  • Lungs 86% water
  • Kidneys 83% water
  • Eyes 95% water

About dehydration:

Many of us are dehydrated. Many times we think we are sick when we are actually dehydrated and the symptoms we are experiencing are symptoms of dehydration – and not some mysterious disease. A parch

ed and dehydrated cell cannot fight off viruses and bacteria nor can it maintain any semblance of health. Headaches and lack of concentration are a symptom of dehydration, as well as parched

and wrinkled skin.

Symptoms of dehydration:

Dehydration occurs when our output of water exceeds our intake. We lose water every day through our urine, skin (perspiration), faeces and lungs (breathing). Drinking diuretics such as coffee, tea, alcohol and caffeinated soft drinks increases this loss. Hidden dehydration occurs when there is not enough water reaching the cells.

Early signs of dehydration are:

  • Fatigue
  • Anxiety
  • Irritability
  • Depression
  • Cravings
  • Cramps
  • Headaches

Mature signs of dehydration:

  • Heartburn
  • Joint and back pain
  • Migraine headaches
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Constipation/colitis
  • Anginal Pain

Signs of Emergency Dehydration:

  • Asthma and Allergies
  • Old age Diabetes
  • Hypertension
  • Autoimmune diseases, Lupus, Psoriasis etc

Drink more water and take a step towards better health

When we understand how important water is to our health and well being we are motivated to drink more water. It’s a simple and effective step towards better health and well-being and a less medicated world.

The quality of the water that we drink is important too.

Our water quality world-wide is far from ideal and we all need to do everything we can to clean up our water and to stop polluting it.
