Are you looking to buy a juicer but overwhelmed by the choices available and not sure where to start? Use these helpful tips to navigate through the maze of juicers and choose the right one for you.

To help you understand what you want out of your juicer, consider the following points.

Budget

Budget is important but try not to buy the cheapest juicer you can find. The juicers efficiency should be weighed up against its cost. The juicer itself is a once off purchase but the fruit and veg that you juice is an ongoing cost. An efficient juicer will extract more juice from your fruit and veg, making it a cost effective choice over time.

Nutritional Value

The greatest benefit of juicing is in the nutritional value of the juice that it produces. Juicing is not just about extracting the juice from the fruit and veg, it’s about extracting the nutrients along with the juice. A good juicer will effectively extract the nutrients along with the juice. Masticating juicers are much more effective at extracting nutrients than centrifugal juicers. Many juice bars use centrifugal juicers because they are faster although many more are switching to masticating juicers. For home use I would always recommend a masticating juicer, unless nutritional value has little value to you.

Food preferences

What fresh foods are you planning on juicing? Most juicers have strengths and weaknesses when juicing different produce.

• Masticating juicers can juice green leaves (eg spinach, kale, wheatgrass) very efficiently whereas most centrifugal juicers do not juice green leaves well and in fact many centrifugal juicers cannot juice green leaves at all. Green leaves have tremendous health benefits and are great to add to your juicing repertoire.

• Vertical masticating juicers generally handle soft fruits better than horizontal masticating juicers. It is however not advisable to juice too much fruit because of the high sugar content. When fruit is eaten whole, the fruit sugars are buffered and slowly released because of the presence of fibre. Because a juicer discards the fibre, when you juice the fruit, the sugars are absorbed quickly and can cause sugar spikes which can cause health problems over time. It is better to eat the whole fruit (or blend the whole fruit into a smoothie), and to juice vegetables.

You can add a little fruit to vegetable medleys to add sweetness and taste, but be aware of not adding too much fruit due to the high sugar content.

• Horizontal masticating juicers are generally slightly better with greens than vertical masticating juicers but can struggle with very soft fruit.

• Vertical masticating juicers need the green leaves (and celery) to be cut into smaller pieces otherwise they wrap around the auger/juicing screw. Horizontal masticating juicers work very well with whole leaves. When you feed them stalk side first, the juicer tends to grab the leaf and self-feed it without any need to push.

Ease of use

Is ease of use important to you? Most people will use their juicer more often if it is easier to clean, assemble and disassemble.

• Masticating juicers are easier to clean than centrifugal juicers.

• Twin gear and twin auger masticating juicers are a little more difficult to juice with than single gear or single auger juicers, but the payoff for the extra effort lies in a higher nutritional yield.

• Although vertical masticating juicers are often marketed as not requiring any cleaning, they are in fact a little more time consuming to clean than horizontal masticating juicers. They can be quicker and easier to juice with though as they lend themselves to self-feeding. Bear in mind that vertical masticating juicers require greens to be cut up and hard veg can also sometimes get stuck and require reversal and refeeding so food prep can be a little more.

Brand reliability

Juicers need to work hard and it is worth buying a reputable brand that will not burn out after a short amount of time. The more expensive juicers are of a higher quality and are more durable.
